MfE Report Not A Basis For Forming Government Policy
The Ministry for the Environment's report Valuing New Zealand's Clean Green Image confirms that New Zealand food is highly valued because it is produced safely in a natural open environment with low chemical inputs.
"This is already well known to our farmers and to any tourist that visits New Zealand," said Federated Farmers President Alistair Polson.
"It is doubtful that the report has added anything to our knowledge. The methodology is weak and based on hypothetical scenarios rather than real market data.
"It would be more useful to ask purchasers why they buy New Zealand product and not competing products," said Mr Polson.
"The message from such analysis would likely confirm that our farm produce is sought because it is seen as safe, of good quality and at the world's best price.
The questionable analysis produced by PA Consulting should be treated on its merits and not used as a basis for forming Government policy, Mr Polson concluded.
