Time's Running Out
Time is running out for those considering standing as candidates in the District Health Board elections according to David Curry, Director of District Health Board Elections at the Ministry of Health.
Applications for nominations close at midday on 24 August and formal registration of nominations has been relatively slow so far. "We are expect nominations to increase considerably over the next two weeks", Mr Curry said
"It is a great opportunity for people to help make sure the health needs of communities are understood and addressed," he said.
This is the first time in over 10 years that the public have had the opportunity to stand as candidates to be elected to the district health boards.
The role of a district health board member includes helping to implement the Government's health and disability strategies, strategic decision-making, directing the organisation and holding management accountable for services provided.
"We hope people from a wide range of backgrounds and cultures will seriously consider this opportunity. This is a good chance for people from communities whose health needs are greatest to contribute to the direction of health services. Eventually this should help improve the overall health status of everyone in the country," Mr. Curry said.
The elections are being run by councils on behalf of the district health boards and will take place by postal voting - which closes at midday on 13 October. Voting forms will be sent out in late September.
