Organising Against Capitalism in the 21st Century

2001: An Anarchist Odyssey
Organising Against Capitalism in the 21st Century

Overview

2001: An Anarchist Odyssey will be held in Christchurch over Labour Weekend (October 20-21). This two-day national anarchist conference will feature workshops and discussions on a variety of topics, loosely based around the theme of local responses to capitalist globalisation and the worldwide "anti-globalisation" movement. Although the overall emphasis will be on anarchist ideas and practices, members of other left groups have been invited to participate, and attendance is open to all.

Venue

The conference will be held at Alders Gate, 309 Durham Street, in the centre of Christchurch. Some events may take place at the new Christchurch activist centre (providing we have moved in by then!).

Schedule

Day One (Saturday 20 October) will focus on the global situation, including discussions/workshops on international organisations such as the WTO and IMF, the worldwide "anti-globalisation" movement, globalisation and anarchism, and globalisation from an anarcha-feminist perspective. Sessions will run from 10am till 6pm, with lunch and dinner provided. A social will be held in the evening.

Day Two (Sunday 21 October) will focus on the situation in Aotearoa, and will include discussions/workshops on such topics as Direct Action, the role of the media (including Indymedia), and Tino Rangatiratanga. Sessions will run from 10am till 6pm, with lunch and dinner provided. A social will be held in the evening.

Cost and Registration

The conference will cost $20 per person for the two days, or $10 for one day. This includes two meals each day. Accommodation is not included, but we will do our best to make suitable arrangements for people who give us notice in advance of the type of accommodation they need (shared/twin/single room at backpackers/YMCA etc.). Money should be paid directly to the organisers at the start of the conference. However, all those planning to attend are encouraged to register in advance so that we have a clear idea of how many people to expect. Registration forms will be available shortly. You can also register by visiting the conference website at:

Aims of the Conference

As well as giving participants the opportunity to learn more about anarchism, exchange ideas and skills, and meet new people, the organisers hope the conference will also serve as a forum for coordinating events around the country as part of the National Day of Action on November 9, organised to coincide with the next WTO meeting in Qatar. There will also inevitably be calls for the formation of a national anarchist federation. The organisers are happy to facilitate such a discussion, but we believe a federation should not be formed until there are enough well-established groups nationwide who share a common set of basic aims and principles.
