G8 Protest Outside Italian Embassy Tomorrow
Press Statement: For Immediate Release
Wellingtonians to protest against state terrorism in Genoa
Wellington activists are planning a demonstration this Thursday at 12pm outside the Italian Embassy on Grant Road, Thorndon. The demonstration is in solidarity with those arrested at the recent G8 summit in Genoa including at least one New Zealander, and in protest of the murder of Carlo Guilani.
One of the organisers, Steve Parvenu, said "We are shocked by the violence of the Italian authorities, including shooting one protestor and then running over his body with a police jeep. Police also entered an Independent Media Centre and confiscated computer equipment which contained important coverage of the protests. There are seious violations of free speech going in the name of a global economy".
"The police claim that they only arrest supposedly violent protestors, but in the early hours of the morning of July 22, the police entered a school and attacked and arrested many activists who were sleeping. Over 30 ambulances were needed at the school to deal with the aftermath of the police attack with most protestors unable to walk afterwards", said Mr Parvenu.
The demonstration in Wellington is one of many protests occuring internationally outside Italian embassies. Protestors hope that it will make the Italian Government aware that the activities of their police will not go unnoticed. All concerned people are welcome to join the protest.
