When In Doubt, Form A Committee

Health Minister Annette King's response to alarming growth in health professional shortages is to form a committee. "Typical!" says Libertarianz Spokesman Sally O'Brien. The Workforce Advisory Committee was supposed to came into effect when the New Zealand Public Health and Disability Bill was passed back in December. Members of the committee were at last announced today.

"Here again we see the effect of having health services managed by government," says O'Brien. "If supermarkets responded this slowly to food shortages there would be an outcry. Instead, while patients with cancer often wait as much as six weeks for potentially life-saving radiotherapy, Annette King dabbles. What does it take to counter the widespread belief that governments should provide these services?"

"Libertarianz in government," confirms O'Brien, "would move quickly to deregulate health services removing them from government bureaucracy so that providers can respond quickly to changes in the availability of resources."
