Let Taxpayers Set Their Own Criteria for DPB
Steve Maharey has "arbitrarily" introduced changes affecting DPB recipients, and there is much controversy. But, says Libertarianz Spokesman Sally O'Brien, "such changes are inherent in our current system of unlimited representational of government. Uncertainty is the leitmotif of such a system."
"Most of us though," says O'Brien, "are simply sick and tired of the burden of being forced to pay for other people's errors in judgement."
She goes on to " put the issue in perspective." "Beneficiaries of all kinds--whether they be Helen Clark's tame artists, or receivers of the Fiddler Bunkle accommodation allowance, or university students, or able-bodied unemployed--all expect to make lifestyle choices which are paid for by the taxpayer, by me and other hard workers like me. I don't see why I should pay for other people's lifestyle choices," she said, and suggests that "supporters of 'no-strings-attached' benefits should pay up themselves, and leave the rest of us alone."
Libertarianz intend to deregulate social welfare totally and encourage private charities, allowing New Zealanders who approve of a charity's activities to set their own criteria for how the money is spent. Only then can such spending truly reflect the views of those that actually foot the bill.
