ALRANZ: Support Mallard's Repeal of Section 105C

Published: Mon 11 Dec 2000 02:02 PM
"The Abortion Law Reform Association of New Zealand supports the Minister of Education's implied repeal of Section 105C of the Education Act, which only encourages mischievous and unrepresentative groups of right-wing "concerned parents" who want to interfere with evidence-based and comprehensive sexuality education." said Craig Young, ALRANZ Research Officer today.
Mr.Young condemned media releases from the Christian Heritage Party and Right to Life New Zealand over proposals for compulsory sex education. He noted that the Abortion Supervisory Committee had recommended that step three years ago, but was ignored until now.
"Right to Life New Zealand refers to "abstinence education" in its media release earlier today. ALRANZ considers that the latest Centre for Disease Control statistics show that this grim game of "Baptist Roulette" has contributed to an upsurge in chlamydia and gonorrhea within the United States. Mr.Mallard is quite right to want to call an end to "junk science" and conservative Christian manipulation of Section 105C. We commend him on his pragmatism and good sense over this issue."
