Motueka & Golden Bay Doctors Reap The Whirlwind

Motueka & Golden Bay Doctors Reap The Whirlwind

Libertarianz health deregulation spokesman Richard McGrath today urged two groups of South Island doctors to abandon further negotiations with Nelson Marlborough Health, privatise the Golden Bay Community Hospital and start charging patients a realistic fee for the service they provide.

"These doctors are continuing to provide round-the-clock medical care in the face of a totally unrealistic offer of funding from Nelson Marlborough Health," said Dr McGrath. "They are learning the hard way that when you jump into bed with the public health authorities, you can catch some pretty nasty diseases."

"Nelson Marlborough Health have no intention of paying these GPs the market rate for their time and skills. Their hospital is haemorrhaging red ink, to the tune of a quarter of a million dollars this year. What better time for this group of doctors to cut themselves free from this disastrous experiment in socialised medicine?"

The Libertarianz spokesman - himself a GP - observed that future medical graduates will have paid for their education, a situation his party supports. "These young doctors will expect a return on their investment, and the best and fairest way to do this is to sell their services directly to patients. User charges will avoid the need for the government to extort money from working people in Whangarei, to fund health care for the people of Golden Bay and Motueka."
