From Dawn Raids To Holiday Weekend Interrogations

Published: Fri 20 Oct 2000 10:32 AM
With only three days notice, gun owners have been told that they must front up to a select committee meeting on the Sunday of a long weekend in order to defend their right to keep their guns. "This is bizarre stuff!" says Libertarianz Firearms Spokesman Peter Linton.
"First we saw the Immigration department using dawn raids to drag people from their homes, and now we see the Law and Order Select Committee use a last minute, long weekend meeting to begin enacting gun registration and confiscation - a long weekend when many gun owners will have already made plans to 'go bush'. It would be almost unbelievable - except that we already know their desperation to disarm New Zealanders," says Linton.
"We already know that they intend to ignore the overwhelmingly negative submissions on the Firearms Amendment Bill No.2 - which does not report back until next year - because Minister Hawkins has already said so. We already know that they intend to ignore New Zealanders' legitimate right to defend themselves, because the courts have told us so. We already know that registration leads to confiscation, because it has happened that way before in this country."
"More than anything, we know that gun owners need to front up to this committee to display their resistance!" exclaims Linton. "They should declare they will not be registering their weapons, and instead will be preparing to bury them."
THE ARMS AMENDMENT SELECT COMMITTE HEARING WILL BE HELD AT 4:30PM, SUNDAY 22 OCTOBER, AT THE HOTEL GRAND CHANCELLOR, CNR KIRKBRIDE & ASCOT ROADS, MANGERE, AUCKLAND.
GUN OWNERS NEED TO BE THERE!
