Inquiry Into Auckland Council Produces Whitewash - Libz

Several months ago, Waiheke and Great Barrier residents made serious allegations against Auckland City Council's staff, and an inquiry was begun. "Unfortunately," says Libertarianz Leader Peter Cresswell, "there is nothing in the inquiry's report that reflects the serious accusations of maltreatment made by residents. The inquiry was an exercise in obfuscation," he says, "and I think we must respond."

"Hundreds of people made submissions to the inquiry," reminds Cresswell, "many recounting tales of dreams shattered by heavy handed bureaucracy - or even of demands for sexual favours in return for resource consents. Many made their submission at great personal cost. They have been ignored."

"This report has been produced to get Auckland City Council off the hook," says Cresswell. "No more, no less. Like Tom Sawyer painting his fence, the Auditor General has been out with the whitewash, and I think we should respond to that appropriately."
