YOUNG NATS BACK PROSTITUTION REFORM BILL
Young Nationals Chair Daniel Gordon today pledged that Young Nationals will support the intentions of the the Prostitution Reform Bill, which will shortly be considered by Parliament in a conscience vote.
"The decriminalisation of solicitation has been Young Nationals policy for over ten years and was most recently reaffirmed at our Policy Conference in March."
"We have recognised for some time the inconsistency of the present law, which makes it legal for a "clients" to ask for sex for money, but not for "workers" to offer sex for money. This anomaly is anachronistic and should have been changed years ago."
"For what is basically a victimless crime the current law is a farce. In certain Australian States, where solicitation has been decriminalised for some time, the effect has been to rid red light areas of crime, harrassment, and abuse of sex workers," said Daniel Gordon.
"Decriminalisation recognises that sex work is not something that will just go away. The proposed change gives sex workers the same protections as other workers and promotes safe sex ."
"Young Nationals will be lobbying National MPs, and indeed encouraging all MPs to support the intentions of this Bill," concluded Daniel Gordon.
