~ 26 August to January 2001 - The Parihaka Exhibition, Wellington City Gallery - the collaborative project initiated by the City Gallery, Wellington, and the people of Parihaka Pä, Taranaki ... it explores and illuminates the cultural realities of both Mäori and Päkehä. It also brings to public attention one of the darkest moments in New Zealand's history: the invasion of Parihaka Pä by colonial forces on 5 November 1881, and the imprisonment to exile of its people, in an attempt to crush the heart of Mäori independence. The Parihaka exhibition gathers together some of the greatest art works produced in this country in the last few decades.
