Public Sector Access To Industry Training Funding

Public Sector Access To Funding For Industry Training

“Allowing public sector employees access to industry training funding removes some absurd anomalies,” said Paul Williams, Executive of the Industry Training Federation.

Many ITOs are already training public sector employees, particularly where they perform similar tasks to private sector employees, but until now they have been unable to access government funding.

“Effectively, many ITOs are subsidising the government,” said Mr Williams

Industry training is available in thousands of industries across New Zealand. According to Skill New Zealand, approximately three-quarters of New Zealand’s industries have access to structured industry training linked to the National Qualifications Framework.

“There is strong growth in industry training and as at March this year, ITOs delivered considerably more training than was purchased by government. In fact, this additional training was worth around $2.4 million dollars,” he said.

“This decision will increase the pressure on baseline funding and Government will need to factor this increase into their budgeting for next year,” he said.
