Widening the Apartheid Gap

Published: Mon 19 Jun 2000 01:00 PM
“Only a fool would consider ‘closing racial gaps’ by increasing racial inequalities,” says Libertarianz Deregulation of Maori Affairs Spokesman Tim Wikiriwhi. “And throwing nearly a billion dollars of taxpayer’s money at Maori simply for being Maori is foolish indeed.”
“Many individual Maori are – thankfully - waking up to the flaws of separatism and the politics of division,” he says, “to the problems of tribalism and the acquisitiveness of tribal leaders, and to the dependence mentality created by generations of govt handouts. This government demonstrates however that it intends to aggravate existing divisions, to increase the bank balances and the power of the tribalists, and to increase the level of dependence.”
Increasingly, many individual Maori have had enough of being patronised, of the govt treating them like basket cases; they see that as long as this separatism continues they can have no mana. Reversing the tragic statistics of Maori health, crime, and poverty can only be achieved by addressing the causes…a victim mentality, and increasing dependence.
“It is not more dependence that Maori need, it is a declaration of independence, “ says Wikiriwhi, “a declaration of independence from the state.”
