A policeman ringing to obtain his file is not what Libertarianz spokesman Daniel Charlton expected to see when he finished presenting the party’s submission to a Parliamentary Select Committee!

Presenting in Palmerston North to the Law and Order Select Committee, who are hearing submissions on the Firearms Amendment Bill No.2, Mr Charlton emerged from presenting his submission opposing gun registration to find the Head of the Firearms Relicensing Task Force, Inspector Joe Green, on the phone asking to have Mr Charlton’s file sent to him!

Says Mr Charlton: “After I sat down I noticed the police adviser to the select committee leave the room. It was at this stage that I felt like some fresh air so I left the room. While I was in the foyer I heard the police inspector make a phone call to get more information on a ‘young man, mid twenties who had just presented an extreme submission. He also had something printed on the back of his t-shirt’. The inspector gave my name and waited five minutes for a return phone call. He received my current address a details and said that the should probably pay me a visit this week - ‘to see what he's about’.”

This is chilling! As Charlton says: “It appears if you present a viewpoint that’s not politically correct in this police state you will be visited and labelled an extremist”.

One fears for free speech in this country.
