A Fresh Approach Is Welcome

A FRESH APPROACH IS WELCOME

“The Manufacturers Federation welcomes the Government’s announcement today on the new Ministry of Economic Development as the first tangible sign of its commitment to rebuilding New Zealand’s productive sector,” said Simon Carlaw, Chief Executive of the Federation.

“While the policies of the last fifteen years have slowed the decline in New Zealand’s comparative wealth, a fresh approach is required if the process is to be reversed and real growth achieved.

“We also welcome the new focus promised by the Deputy Prime Minister for the Ministry of Economic Development. We are sure that Mr Anderton will wish to encourage close and continuing consultation with those in manufacturing and industry who have successfully survived the policies delivered by the Ministry’s predecessor over the past decade or so. This, in itself, would be a positive new development.

“We shall in particular look to ensure that the Ministry’s attention remains on the sustainable creation of jobs and the accelerated growth of high valued-added exports. Particular care will need to be taken that these policies do not get ensnared in bureaucracy at any level.
