Government should sell TVNZ

New Zealand Young National’s Policy Chair Grant Tyrrell commented, yesterday, on the ineptitude of the new government in dealing with state owned enterprises.

“The decision by Helen Clark not to allow TVNZ to expand in to digital television is a prime example of why the government should not be in the business of business. The state has no ability to take advantage of commercial opportunities before they become commercial white elephants,” said Grant Tyrrell.

“The benefits of private ownership of non core services have been seen in the telecommunications industry. Since the sale of Telecom and deregulation in this industry New Zealander’s have benefited with some of the most sophisticated communications in the world, and cheaper prices. Under state ownership general taxes would still be paying the wages of operators!

“Young Nationals have a message for Marion Hobbs – since you clearly can not manage TVNZ, sell it before you destroy it. New Zealand deserves a modern television network – not a taxpayer subsidised version of “Marion and Friends TV.
