Labour elects Cabinet ministers

Published: Fri 3 Dec 1999 02:47 PM
Prime Minister-elect Helen Clark today announced Labour’s Cabinet ministers, following an election held at a meeting of the Labour caucus.
“Labour’s Cabinet line-up is a strong and talented one, drawing on a range of skills and experiences.
“The Cabinet ministers elected have an average Parliamentary experience of eight years. They are broadly geographically based, with four from Auckland, four from Wellington, one from Christchurch, one from Dunedin and six from regional New Zealand.
“Five women have been elected, a number equal to that achieved by the Fourth Labour Government in 1990.
“Labour’s ministers will be in the engine room of the fresh start in social and economic policy mandated by voters at last Saturday’s general election.
“This programme will focus on rebuilding education, housing and other public services, giving certainty to the provision of superannuation, and transforming New Zealand’s economy.”
Helen Clark said that appointments to positions outside Cabinet were pending. The allocation of responsibilities to ministers will be announced next week.
