Maori Language, Maori Culture - Based On Respect And Courtesy
Tutekawa Wyllie, MP for Te Tai Tonga believes that the use of te Reo Maori in the House must be positively encouraged and promoted for and by all MPs and not just the Maori MPs.
“Te Reo Maori is precious and by all means should be promoted and maintained through everyday use. If we are really serious about developing, promoting and supporting the Maori language in the House, then let us give it the respect it deserves by giving our colleagues who do not understand Maori the respect and courtesy they deserve. Shoving it down their throats wont work.”
“We ought to provide them the opportunity to participate via translations. The language belongs to all New Zealanders as of right. We, the guardians, should lead others with dignity and aroha.”
“I understand the passion and enthusiasm that is motivating other Maori members in the House to speak Maori. However, I believe a gradual approach which is all inclusive would lead to a faster, more positive and hopefully permanent result” Mr. Wyllie said.
