I’ll Win Whangarei On Merit – Donnelly

Ructions in the National Party in Whangarei are of no consequence to front-runner in the campaign race, New Zealand First’s Brian Donnelly.

“As far as I’m concerned I will win the constituency seat on my own merits,” said Brian Donnelly today.

“The people of Whangarei were deserted by their elected constituency member, John Banks, soon after the last election when he took up full-time work as a radio announcer. He later moved to live in Auckland.

“I have not deserted the people of Whangarei and have worked assiduously for their interests.

“What National does within its own internal organisation is irrelevant,” said Mr Donnelly.

Brian Donnelly was beaten by 383 votes by John Banks in the 1996 election. He entered Parliament on the New Zealand First list, was Minister of the Education Review Office and Associate Minister of Education and Pacific Islands Affairs until the break up of the coalition. At this time he resigned his warrant to remain loyal to the people who voted for New Zealand First.
