Morgan calls on Maori leader to put his mana on the line
Te Tai Hauauru MP, Tuku Morgan today challenged the faceless Maori leader who hit his wife and gained court protection,
to stand up publicly and see if his mana remains intact.
"By its stupid action, the Court has said that women do not have mana. It has devalued the standing of women, by saying
that a Maori man can attack his wife, and claim his public status as a defence.
"You must have mana to lose it, and if you hit your wife and partner, you never had it in the first place. Mana is
earned not waved around as a right. The Courts had no right to make that decision, and it has set a very ugly
precedent," Tuku Morgan said.
He said his challenge to the so-called Maori leader was not an election ploy but a matter of protecting the basic human
right, to be guaranteed safety and security. "This court decision is demeaning of women, and has undone hundreds of
years of progress on the issue of gender justice," Tuku Morgan said.
