Speech By Secretary To The Treasury Caralee McLiesh: Economic Policy For The Challenges Ahead
Secretary to the Treasury Dr Caralee McLiesh delivered the opening keynote speech at the 62nd Annual Conference of the New Zealand Association of Economists (NZAE) in Wellington today.
In ‘Economic policy for the challenges ahead’ Dr McLiesh examines three key themes:
- Better measures and further research that take a broad view of economic performance and productivity are a foundation for navigating our complex environment.
- Our economic performance both now and in the longer term depends critically on tackling supply constraints. Although monetary and fiscal policy are adjusting and playing their part in reducing demand towards supply, reforms that drive productivity and expand the productive capacity of the economy are as important as they have ever been.
- We need a greater focus on building economic resilience. While there are a range of reforms that boost productivity and resilience, the speech highlights regulatory policy as a critical lever.
