New Zealand First is today celebrating World Radio Day, the theme of which this year is the role radio plays in democratic debate and fostering peace and tolerance.

Jenny Marcroft, New Zealand First Spokesperson for Broadcasting, says it is an opportunity to celebrate the important, but often overlooked, role that radio plays in our communities.

“Radio is so much a part of everyday life that we forget that it is radio that usually informs us first, with over 80% of the New Zealand population listening to the radio each week,” says Ms Marcroft, a former radio broadcaster.

“We also forget that radio is still the widest reaching communication medium in the world, connecting even the most remote communities, and plays a key role in the political process, international development and emergency communication and disaster relief.

“I would like to congratulate all the hosts and staff on all radio stations around New Zealand who provide a vital link between Kiwis and their communities.

“Maori Radio and Access Radio deserve special appreciation for their dedication and commitment to being a voice for their communities,” added Ms Marcroft.
