Smokefree Vehicles in Childrens' Best Interest
New Zealand First welcomes the Government's announcement to prohibit smoking in vehicles carrying children under 18 years of age.
“This is a sensible measure that protects children who are particularly vulnerable to the effects of second-hand smoke exposure, and often have no choice in the matter,” says New Zealand First Spokesperson for Health, Jenny Marcroft
“More than 100 New Zealanders die every year from the effects of second-hand smoke and this change will bring us in line with other countries like Australia, UK, Canada and South Africa.
“And despite the near-unanimous support from public health experts, as well as from most Kiwis for clean air in cars for kids, do-nothing National failed to act,” she added.
“This is about getting clean air for kids.
“No longer will children be choking on second-hand smoke in cars. New Zealand First has a proud history of advocating for the improved health and wellbeing of our tamariki and we will continue to do so,” says Ms Marcroft.
