NZ First Expresses Condolences on Passing of Film-Maker Geoff Murphy
New Zealand First is saddened to learn of the death of pioneering New Zealand movie director Geoff Murphy.
His iconic 1981 movie Goodbye Pork Pie, followed by Utu and The Quiet Earth, marked the resurgence of New Zealand’s film industry and helped set it on the path to international recognition and success.
“Murphy worked hard with vision and passion, sometimes against the odds,” says Arts, Culture and Heritage spokesperson Jenny Marcroft. “His legacy will be the contribution he made to our film industry that is today respected around the world.”
“He richly deserved the accolades which came his way and his loss will be felt by many in the film industry.”
