Mexican Senate President visits after Mexican Elections
Office of the Speaker of the NZ House of
Representatives
Rt Hon Trevor Mallard
PRESS RELEASE
25 July 2018
The President of the Mexican Senate, Senator Ernesto Cordero, is visiting New Zealand as a Guest of the New Zealand Parliament this week.
New Zealand’s Speaker, Rt Hon Trevor Mallard, is delighted to host Senator Cordero and his delegation.
“This visit is an excellent opportunity to celebrate 45 years of diplomatic relations between New Zealand and Mexico. I welcome that this cross-party Delegation has been able to come so soon after recent elections in Mexico, which will see a new government in December. This high level visit is an opportune time to discuss events in Mexico and the region, and our common interests in the bilateral relationship.”
Mexico is New Zealand’s largest trading partner in Latin America, and in April it ratified the CPTPP, which is New Zealand’s first trade agreement with Mexico. Mexico is a like-minded partner at the U.N. and takes a keen interest in Asia-Pacific developments.
We share the “Ring of Fire” with all this means such as for our shared interests in disaster planning and responses as well as for geothermal energy and tourism.
We have growing education ties as well as people to people connections. This includes playing rugby.
The Senator and his delegation will be visiting Wellington, Rotorua and Auckland.
The visit takes place 25-29 July 2018.
