New Zealand delegation to present our record on women’s rights to UN
Jan Logie, Under-Secretary for Justice (Domestic and Sexual Violence Issues), travels today to attend the examination of
New Zealand’s eighth periodic report on CEDAW, the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of
Discrimination against Women.
“I’m honoured to lead our delegation to the CEDAW examination,” says Jan Logie.
“Our Government is committed to advancing women’s rights and empowerment. We value the opportunity to have an open and
frank discussion on progress for New Zealand women, and to benefit from the Committee’s expertise and knowledge.
“I also acknowledge the important contribution of our vibrant and diverse NGO sector, who also report to the Committee
this week, giving their perspective on the progress and challenges for women in Aotearoa.
“I will be pleased to talk to the CEDAW Committee about our Government’s early efforts to make a real difference to the
lives of women and girls in New Zealand. These include a focus on improving wellbeing, reducing poverty and welfare
reform, ensuring women and girls are free from violence and equal pay.”
“New Zealand maintains a strong international reputation on gender equality. Our participation at CEDAW is an
opportunity to measure our performance, and set a baseline for our new Government to improve on.”
CEDAW defines women’s rights and sets out an agenda for countries to end discrimination against women. New Zealand
ratified CEDAW in 1985 and reports on its progress every four years. Government representatives then present the report
at the UN and answer questions from the CEDAW Committee.
The most recent report, which this examination relates to, was made in 2016.
Jan Logie is leading the delegation on behalf of Hon Julie Anne Genter, Minister for Women, who is unable to travel.
The examination will take place on 12 July 2018 at the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland.
