Chris Bishop MP with Kathryn Dickens, chair of the Kelson Community Association.
This week MP for Hutt South Chris Bishop’s petition for a pedestrian crossing on Major Drive was delivered to Mayor Ray
Wallace of Hutt City Council.
“Kelson residents have been calling for a pedestrian crossing on Major Drive for many years but the Council has not
acted. It’s time they got on with it.
“The current arrangements on Major Drive are totally inadequate. Drivers don’t know whether to stop or keep going at the
existing kea crossing by the school, even when the school patrol is active. Parents and children regularly wait for some
minutes before venturing out to cross the road, always worried a car will come along with no obligation to stop.
“The present crossing is unsafe and presents a danger to those it is supposed to protect. A pedestrian crossing is
needed now so that motorists know they need to stop and so that parents and children can cross the road safely”, says
Bishop.
The petition has 536 signatures from concerned Kelson residents, showing clear community support for the new crossing.
“It’s just common sense that there should be a pedestrian crossing on a busy road near to schools and kindergartens.
“Thank you to everyone who signed my petition. I hope this will send a strong message to Council that the time to act is
now.”
The petition has support from Kelson School, Kelson Kindergarten, Discovery Christian Centre, the Kelson Community
Association, and the Four Square.
