Have your say on the Land Transport Management (Regional Fuel Tax) Amendment Bill
There’s just over a week remaining to tell the Finance and Expenditure Committee what you think about the Land Transport
Management (Regional Fuel Tax) Amendment Bill, with submissions closing at midnight on Friday 20 April 2018.
The bill would let local councils propose a new fuel tax of up to 10 cents per litre in their region, in order to fund
new transport infrastructure projects in the region. The tax would be initially available only to Auckland, before
becoming available to other regional councils in 2021.
To propose a new fuel tax, a council would have to consult the affected community, and outline in its plan:
• the proposed tax rate
• the duration of the tax (up to a maximum of 10 years initially)
• the transport programme and projects that would be funded by the tax, and how the proposal contributes to the regional
transport plan
• the relevant Government Policy Statement on land transport
• any other documents specified by the Minister of Finance and the Minister of Transport.
In order for it to be implemented, both the Minister of Finance and the Minister of Transport would have to accept the
proposal.
Tell the Finance and Expenditure Committee what you think
Send your submission on the bill by midnight on Friday 20 April 2018.
