Have your say on the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership
You have until 28 March 2018 to have your say on the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).
The Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Committee is now inviting submissions on the bill.
The CPTPP is a free trade agreement negotiated by 11 countries in the Asia-Pacific region, including New Zealand, Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, Singapore, and Viet Nam.
The CPTPP includes many of the elements that were negotiated as part of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), but with some differences. Following the withdrawal of the United States in January 2017, the remaining participants agreed to establish and negotiate a new agreement that would suspend 22 items from the TPP. This means that a number of TPP-related outcomes that were of concern to New Zealanders in the areas of investment, intellectual property, and pharmaceuticals have been suspended.
The CPTPP seeks to create new opportunities for international trade and more jobs that help generate a better standard of living for New Zealanders. It would preserve New Zealand's right to regulate for legitimate public policy purposes, and uphold the Treaty of Waitangi. It includes commitments to safeguard and enforce high labour and environmental standards across the Asia-Pacific region.
Tell the Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Committee what you think
Send your submission on the bill by midnight on 28 March 2018.
