Have your say: Bill aims to deter livestock theft
Parliament is now seeking public submissions on a bill aimed at deterring livestock rustling (the theft of livestock
from farms or property).
Livestock rustling is estimated to cost the farming community over $120 million each year and is a major threat to
farming businesses. It also puts the safety of people in isolated, rural areas at risk because rustlers are often armed.
The Sentencing (Livestock Rustling) Amendment Bill seeks to:
• deter people from livestock rustling by identifying it as an aggravating factor at sentencing; and
• amend section 9 (Aggravating and mitigating factors) of the Sentencing Act 2002 to add livestock rustling to the list
of aggravating factors to be considered at sentencing.
Don’t miss your chance to have your say on this bill that could impact one of New Zealand’s key industries.
