Have Your Say on the End of Life Choice Bill
Parliament’s Justice Committee is now seeking public submissions on the End of Life Choice Bill.
“We want to hear the public’s views on the bill so the committee can make informed decisions about whether any changes
are needed to improve it,” says Raymond Huo, Labour MP and Chairperson of the Justice Committee.
The bill seeks to give people with a terminal illness or a grievous and irremediable medical condition the option of
requesting assisted dying. It sets out the proposed legal process for requesting assisted dying, including the following
requirements:
• People may only request assisted dying if they fulfil the conditions listed in the bill
• At least two medical practitioners must review the request
• Consent is ongoing and may be withdrawn at any point in the process.
The bill would also establish an end of life consultation group, made up of medical experts, within the Ministry of
Health. The group’s responsibilities would include allocating medical professionals to consider requests, provide
advice, and set standards of care.
