Māori Party welcomes decision on e-cigarettes

The Māori Party is welcoming the Government’s announcement today that the sale of nicotine e-cigarettes and e-liquid will be made legal.

“The announcement today is a response to the Māori Party’s call for the Government to look beyond traditional quit smoking tools and methods, which actually aren’t working as well as they should be,” said Māori Party co-leader Marama Fox.

“I’m pleased that we’ve been able to get this matter on the Government’s agenda.
“The Māori Party will continue to push for not only a subsidy of e-cigarettes but that they be made part of the cessation programmes taking place throughout the country to reduce the unnecessary deaths caused by cancer-causing sticks.”

“The Māori Party has been leading reforms on tobacco since 2007 when it launched its Tobacco out of Aotearoa campaign in response to the high numbers of Māori people and New Zealanders who die from smoking-related diseases,” says Te Ururoa Flavell, Māori Party co-leader.

“The Māori Party recognises that the Bill is yet to come before the House and that it will provide the opportunity to flesh out discussions about regulations and evidence,” said Ms Fox.
