Increasing the penalty for supplying explosives

16 March 2017

Have your say on increasing the penalty for supplying explosives for criminal activity

You have until 7 April 2017 to have your say on increasing the penalty for supplying explosives for criminal activity. It is proposed that the penalty increase from the current maximum of 2 years to a maximum of 5 years’ imprisonment.

The Law and Order Committee is inviting submissions on the Crimes (Increased Penalty for Providing Explosive to Commit Crime) Amendment Bill. This member’s bill (in the name of Alastair Scott MP) proposes amending section 272 of the Crimes Act 1961 to increase the penalty for providing explosives to commit crime.

The penalty applies to people who supply explosive substances, or equipment used to create explosive substances, with the knowledge that they will be used in criminal activity. The increase is intended to bring the penalty in line with other weapons offences.

Tell the Law and Order Committee what you think

Send your submission on the bill by midnight on 7 April 2017.
