Private International Law (Choice of Law in Tort) Bill
Public submissions are now open on the Private International Law (Choice of Law in Tort) Bill, which is being considered by Parliament’s Justice and Electoral Committee.
The bill aims to establish rules for choosing which law will apply when determining issues relating to tort, which is the law relating to private disputes between people. Generally, if all the events giving rise to tort occur in one jurisdiction, the law of that jurisdiction will apply. If the events took place in different jurisdictions, the bill sets out rules based on the type of tort.
