Visitor Levy Could Do So Much More - Dunne

Following news today that the Government is considering allowing district councils the power to charge visitor levies, UnitedFuture leader Hon Peter Dunne, says a uniform national conservation levy imposed on all visitors would be far more effective than the government’s random proposals.

"Our outstanding conservation estate is vital for attracting an overseas market of visitors to our country but it needs adequate attention and nourishment from central government if it is to remain in pristine condition," said Mr Dunne.

"UnitedFuture therefore proposes a conservation levy of $25 on tourist visas with the revenue used exclusively for maintaining and upgrading the conservation estate.

"Currently the costs of maintaining our outdoor recreation area are left to those who live here or funded out of a main pool of money from taxes such as GST where there is no guarantee of the money ever reaching the places visitors actually go.

"By placing in a small levy we can raise enough revenue to make our natural areas more visitor friendly and ensure that they are protected for future generations across the world.

"Importantly, the levy strikes a balance, we do not think tourists should be treated as a cash cow for any policy that could exists simply because they can be taxed, but in places where the benefits are shared amongst residents, citizens and tourists, it is only fair that we all contribute to the costs.

"Our natural environment and ecosystems are outstanding and they deserve policies that will guarantee their future preservation so that we, and those who inherit it, can experience and enjoy them.

"UnitedFuture’s proposal would be a firm step in that environmentally responsible direction."
