Green Party offers condolences and thanks after earthquake
The Green Party wishes to offer its condolences to the loved ones of the people who died as a result of yesterday
morning’s earthquake. The Party also wants to thank the countless number of emergency services personnel, civil defence
staff, and media who are helping to keep people safe and informed following the quake.
“It’s heart-breaking that two people have lost their lives, and others have been injured, because of yesterday morning’s
events,” said Green Party Co-leader Metiria Turei.
“On behalf of the Green Party, I would like to offer my condolences to the family and friends of those people, and
extend my best wishes to everyone who is still dealing with the effects of the quake, including ongoing aftershocks.
“In particular, I would like to say to the people of Kaikoura and those around the top of the South Island and
Wellington that you are in our thoughts.
“For many communities, there will be a long clean-up and re-build ahead. I want people in those communities to know that
we stand with you now, and will continue to in the future.
“I would also like to acknowledge and thank the emergency services personnel, civil defence staff and media for their
professional and tireless work.
“Many of these people were directly affected by the earthquake themselves, and still had to go to work immediately
afterwards.
“It takes a lot of bravery to put your own safety and fears aside to help others, and we owe them all our heartfelt
thanks.
“This earthquake has been a difficult and traumatic event for many New Zealanders. We know that in the coming days and
weeks, people will come together as neighbours and as a community and help each other. The Green Party will support
those efforts in any and every way we can,” said Mrs Turei.
