ACT: There’s more to American democracy than Trump
ACT: There’s more to American democracy than Trump
ACT Leader David Seymour responds to the US election result:
“This result will certainly concern many New Zealanders, but American democracy reflects the will of American voters. This result should be respected, and ACT offers its congratulations to president-elect Trump.
“The American government is not defined by whoever holds the presidency, but by the web of governors, senators, congress members, appointees, and judges who together abide by strict checks and balances. In particular, the US constitution is widely respected for how it prevents government overreach.
“ACT has always advocated an open New Zealand which accesses the best of the global economy. In the wake of Donald Trump’s victory, we’ll continue to push for more open exchange of products, labour, and defence capabilities between New Zealand and the US.
“More broadly, we must maintain and enhance our friendship with the American government and, above all, with the American people, who share our fundamental values of freedom and civility.”
