Have your say on the Rangitāne Tū Mai Rā (Wairarapa Tamaki nui-a-Rua) Claims Settlement Bill.
Wairapapa iwi are a step closer to settling the historical Treaty of Waitangi claims of Rangitāne, with the bill now open for public submissions with Parliament’s Māori Affairs Committee.
The House of Representatives recently sat through extended sitting hours to pass the Rangitāne Tū Mai Rā (Wairarapa Tamaki nui-a-Rua) Claims Settlement Bill’s first reading.
The bill gives effect to the deed of settlement signed on 6 August 2016 in which the Crown and Rangitāne o Wairarapa and Rangitāne o Tamaki nui-ā-Rua agreed to a final settlement. Once passed, the legislation will give effect to the terms of the settlement, which has been years in the making.
Māori Affairs Committee chairperson Tutehounuku Korako says, “This bill is an opportunity for Wairapapa iwi to address the past, and receive an apology from the Crown which are important steps forward for all New Zealanders.”
“Rangitāne is an iwi of about 3,000 people. The area of interest for this bill spans from Mākaramu down to Cape Palliser. It encompasses the wider Wairarapa and Tamaki Nui-ā-Rua regions. I’d encourage all New Zealanders with Wairapapa whakapapa to have their say about this bill,” he said.
