Health Select Committee to begin Oral Hearings into ‘Ending One’s Life in New Zealand’ (Petition of Hon Maryan Street)


The Health Select Committee has agreed to begin oral hearings on the Petition of Hon Maryan Street and 8,974 Others from 24 August 2016. This is the next step in the parliamentary petition process.

The Office of the Clerk has processed a total of 21,435 written submissions. This represents the bulk of submissions received. A final number will be known later in the process after the Office of the Clerk completes its final considerations.

The Office of the Clerk have advised the committee that over 1,800 submitters have indicated that they would like to speak to the committee.

It remains the committee’s intention to hold hearings around New Zealand. These locations will be agreed upon by the committee over the coming weeks.

The committee once again thanks all who have taken the time to make a submission.
