Parliament’s Commerce Committee is considering a bill that proposes making it easier for people involved in shared property or apartments to connect to Ultra-Fast Broadband (UFB), while ensuring protections remain in place for property owners.
The main aim of the Telecommunications (Property Access and Other Matters) Amendment Bill is to amend the Telecommunications Act 2001 (the Act) to:
• introduce new measures in relation to access to property, involving rights of multiple parties, in order to connect fibre optic media and other technology;
• amend the amounts payable by liable persons to the Crown;
• amendments in relation to participation in the Ultra-fast Broadband Initiative; and
• introduce a dispute resolution service ; and
• amend the liability allocation process for telecommunications providers.
New Zealanders can make a submission to the committee on The Telecommunications (Property Access and Other Matters) Amendment Bill. The closing date for submissions is Thursday, 18 August 2016.
