Collins Hiding Behind Flawed Crime Statistics

Collins Hiding Behind Flawed Crime Statistics

Minister of Police Judith Collins is hiding behind flawed statistics that claim crime is going down when it isn’t, New Zealand First says.

“The Minister’s only response to questions in Parliament today was to say, ‘check out the information on the Statistics New Zealand website’,” says Darroch Ball, New Zealand First’s Associate Police spokesman.

“National’s outrageous claim that crime is down 16% is based on piecemeal cherry-picked data which Ms Collins admitted herself when she said ‘no single data source is able to provide a complete picture of offending in New Zealand’.

“The Minister refuses to acknowledge that in 2014 the entire system of crime recording changed so that the total number of criminal offences are now not recorded, nor are resolution rates.

“Also, her recorded crime victims and offender statistics show an increase for the year ending April.

“Ms Collins is misleading the New Zealand public who will not be fooled, nor frontline police; they know crime is increasing,” Mr Ball says.
