Ngāi Te Rangi and Ngā Pōtiki Claims Settlement Bill 2016
The Ngāi Te Rangi and Ngā Pōtiki Claims Settlement Bill is open for submissions, and Parliament’s Māori Affairs Committee want to hear your thoughts on the bill.
The bill gives effect to the deed of settlement entered into by the Crown and Ngāi Te Rangi and Ngā Pōtiki on 14 December 2013 for the final settlement of the historical claims of Ngāi Te Rangi and Ngā Pōtiki. The claims largely relate to land confiscations following conflict in Tauranga in 1864, Crown purchasing methods, and the compulsory acquisition of land for public works purposes.
The bill sets out the historical account of the claims, and the acknowledgements and apology given by the Crown to Ngāi Te Rangi and Ngā Pōtiki in the deed of settlement. As well as the provisions of the settlement, the bill provides for cultural and commercial reparation.
