Budget 2016: Virtually Another Frozen Police Budget

The government has told the police to “Get Stuffed” by freezing the money going into frontline work for the sixth year in a row, says New Zealand First.

“There’s nothing in it to help the ordinary Kiwi – whose home has been burgled for a second time, or the liquor or dairy owners who’ve been targeted by directionless youth,” says New Zealand First’s acting Spokesperson for Police Darroch Ball.

“The $299 million just covers basic pay rises for the police and does nothing to provide more police officers and greater resources.

“Police resources will continue to be stretched beyond their limits.

“If the government was serious about preventing and reducing crime there would be enough money for new police operations and initiatives.

“National can’t hide behind reduced crime rates when they’ve closed more than 30 police stations around the country.

“Kiwi taxpayers deserve a strong law and order system,” says Mr Ball.
