NZ First Calls for Commission of Inquiry into Panama Papers

The Panama Papers fiasco is becoming such an embarrassment for New Zealand, a Commission of Inquiry must be held, says New Zealand First

“The New Zealand public have a right to know what is going on and they will have no confidence in John Nash, the IRD official the government has tasked with the job of reviewing the impact of the Panama Papers on this country,” says New Zealand First Leader and Northland Member of Parliament Rt Hon Winston Peters says.

“All we’ve had from the Prime Minister and the government have been flat denials that New Zealand is not being used by the mega wealthy and criminals as a safe tax haven when more and more experts are coming forward and saying, we are.

“The Prime Minister and his government need to wake up and give up on their attempted cover-up.

“We are being internationally embarrassed over this matter, so much so the only way to clean it up is to have a Commission of Inquiry.

“And not led by someone from the old boys’ network; we must not have John Nash who made a mess of the Winebox inquiry more than 20 years ago and we must not have anyone from the government’s old boys’ network.

“The last thing we want is some former minister, it must be set up by someone who is totally independent and trustworthy and who is given all the powers to get to the truth,” Mr Peters says.
