Prime Minister opens new Otahuhu College science block

Prime Minister John Key today officially opened Otahuhu College’s new science block.

The new science block was constructed and completed during 2015 at a cost $7 million. It has nine fully-equipped labs. It opened to students at the beginning of the 2016 school year.

“Our new science block is designed to get more of our students enthused about science and science-based careers”, says Principal Neil Watson.

“There is growing demand in our community for science education and the need to have more of our students going on to degree level study in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) subjects.

“Our school community is well aware of the capacity of science and technology to open the door to a huge variety of careers. Our new facility will spark the interest and intellectual curiosity of our students and ensure Otahuhu College students are well-equipped to take advantage of exciting opportunities.

Mr Watson says his local community’s demand for science matches the New Zealand wide focus on building science and technology capacity to assist New Zealand’s economic development over the next decade.

The Otahuhu College science labs will also be used by local primary and intermediate schools, for holiday programmes and afterschool STEM based activities.

“Our new science block is a very exciting development for our students and the wider community”, says Mr Watson.
