Peters Calls for British Trade Deal
If British voters elect to leave the European Union, New Zealand First wants Closer Commonwealth Economic Relations (CCER) with the United Kingdom.
“In only four months British voters will decide whether to remain in Europe, or to exit - the ‘Brexit’ as it is called,” says New Zealand First Leader and Member of Parliament for Northland Rt Hon Winston Peters.
“New Zealand First believes our oldest and most successful trade agreement, CER with Australia, provides the ideal template for Closer Commonwealth Economic Relations.
“New Zealand should be planning for a possible Brexit as the latest poll had the ‘Leave’ camp, 3 percent ahead of ‘Stay.’ It is an opportunity for not just New Zealand businesses, products and people, but to heal a rift dating back to 1973.
“Norway and Switzerland prove Britain can flourish outside of the European Union.
“London’s influential Mayor, Boris Johnson, who is also a British MP, has publicly backed calls for a ‘bilateral mobility zone’ between the UK, New Zealand, Canada and Australia.
“Based on the highly successful Trans-Tasman Travel Arrangement, it shows the opportunity within our grasp. It is more substantial than a farcical ‘free trade’ deal with the EU which doesn’t address the €50bn in subsidies it pays to its farmers,” says Mr Peters.
