Birth Deaths, Marriages and Relationships Registration (Preventing Name Change by Child Sex Offenders) Bill
On 2 December 2015, the House of Representatives referred the Birth Deaths, Marriages and Relationships Registration (Preventing Name Change by Child Sex Offenders) Amendment Bill to the Social Services Select Committee for consideration and report to the House by 2 June 2016.
The bill would prevent convicted child sex offenders from changing their name by excluding them from the definition of persons who are eligible to change their name.
The bill will also be considered alongside the Report of the Attorney-General under the New Zealand Bill of Rights Act 1990 on the Births, Deaths, Marriages and Relationships Registration (preventing Name Change by Child Sex Offenders) Amendment Bill.
The committee has resolved to publicly call for submissions and advises that submissions will close at 5pm on Wednesday, 3 February 2016.
