The government is still failing to step up and address allegations highlighting serious issues at Korowai Manaaki youth facility, says New Zealand First.
“The Minister for Social Development, Anne Tolley, claims serious allegations of unsafe practices at Korowai Manaaki are being investigated and concerns are being dealt with,” says New Zealand First Spokesperson for Social Development Darroch Ball.
“As a result of a series of written questions to the Minister it has become clear that basic data on Korowai Manaaki youth facility, as well as other Child Youth and Family youth justice facilities already under scrutiny, has not been not collated.
“We would expect an investigating Ministry to be closely scrutinising activity in these Child Youth and Family facilities given the allegations raised.
“There appears to be a blatant lack of oversight in the protection of both young people and staff,” says Mr Ball
“Korowai Manaaki Youth Justice Facility in South Auckland requires immediate intervention and further oversight by Minister Tolley. We see an urgent need for this to be extended to all youth justice facilities in New Zealand.”
