New Zealand First will say no to 'Red Peak'
New Zealand First will not countenance any change to the flag referendum process, unless there is a Bill to repeal it.
“This referendum is already a farce and the only amendment should be a Bill to repeal this sorry mess. That will get our vote,” says Deputy Leader Ron Mark.
“This Bill promoted by the Greens and supported by National makes a mockery of the democratic process.
“We will say no to the Green-National ‘Red Peak’ option. We believe in proper democratic process and we do not want to waste more taxpayers’ money.
“We opposed the flag change and did not sit on the flag change committee.
“The process was manipulated by the government. The first referendum question should have been: ‘Do you want to change the flag?’.
“’Red Peak’ has been heavily promoted, it is a design from somewhere else, used as a US corporate logo or by Germans in WW2 for sentry boxes, just like this example in Belgium.
“It underscores why keeping one of the oldest continuous flags on earth befits our status as one of the world’s oldest continuous democracies.
“We say voters should put ‘KOF’ or ‘Keep our Flag’ on their ballot papers in the first referendum,” says Mr Mark.
